In a setback that can only be described as a clerical fumble, Milwaukee Public Schools' Bay View High School and Pulaski High School's football teams have been handed a heavy penalty. The schools are mandated to forfeit all of their 2024 football games, including a ban from playoffs for the next two years due to a paperwork snafu. The information was confirmed by Lisa Dawes, the Bay View High School Athletic Director, in a statement obtained by TMJ4.
The mess stems from an administrative oversight in not filing the required documents for a conference realignment to the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association. According to a detailed report by JSOnline, the error was attributed to Bobbie Kelsey, the city-wide interscholastic athletics commissioner. Bay View's Jay Wojcinski explained the situation, stating, "She didn't fill out the paperwork with (the WIAA), so it was never approved for us to move over and Pulaski to move over." This error resulted in non-approved conference games, automatically triggering a forfeit under Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association rules.
Officials at Pulaski High School have confirmed the same predicament, highlighting the impact of the district's oversight. In keeping with the Milwaukee City League's protocol, the schools had undergone their usual swaps, with the lowest team in the Richardson division moving to the Blackbourn division and vice versa at the season's end. However, it appears that the necessary formalities were overlooked.
Though Bay View is considering an appeal, the current decision stands as a harsh lesson in the importance of attention to detail, especially when the stakes involve students' athletic opportunities. Dawes, striking a note of resolve amidst the disappointing news, communicated to CBS 58, "We are still gathering facts regarding this situation." The implications of these forfeitures extend beyond the field, potentially affecting the morale and athletic futures of the students involved.
