A Milwaukee woman is facing serious federal charges after being indicted for allegedly running a multimillion-dollar health care fraud scheme that targeted vulnerable pregnant women and new mothers. Lakia Jackson, 34, is accused of defrauding Medicaid by claiming to provide prenatal and childcare coordination services that were never actually offered through her business, We Care Services, according to the United States Attorney's Office.
Details from the United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Wisconsin show that between June 2020 and December 2021, Jackson allegedly used incentives to enroll participants in services she later falsely billed to Medicaid. The indictment states these incentives attracted women to her agency, which promised important support to tackle Wisconsin's high infant mortality rate among marginalized groups. The services were supposed to include health and nutrition education, prenatal care, and post-birth support.
Jackson faces serious federal charges, including Health Care Fraud and False Statements, along with counts for the Anti-Kickback Statute, Money Laundering, and Aggravated Identity Theft. The indictment claims she billed for prenatal care coordination services that were never provided. If convicted, she could face a minimum two-year sentence for Aggravated Identity Theft and potentially decades for the Health Care Fraud charges. The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Medicaid Fraud Control and Elder Abuse Unit, with prosecutors Julie F. Stewart and Kate M. Biebel handling the case, as reported by the United States Attorney's Office.
