A Montgomery County woman will be imprisoned for life after pleading guilty but mentally ill to the murders of her parents, as reported by NBC Philadelphia. Verity Beck, a 45-year-old former special education teacher, was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole for the grisly crime.
According to the The Philadelphia Inquirer, the victims, Reid and Miriam Beck, were found in their Abington home in January 2023, with gunshot wounds to the head. Their remains were discovered in varying stages of dismemberment, with a chainsaw nearby — a chilling scene that their son stumbled upon when he went to check on them.
The horrific details of the case have cast a shadow over the community, particularly after it was revealed that Beck faced financial difficulties and was accused by her parents of theft. Text message records showed allegations of her stealing a $600 rent check and making over $1,000 in purchases on her parent's Amazon account, which included a pricey necklace, as mentioned in The Philadelphia Inquirer.
In court, Beck's defense claimed she was insane at the time of the murders. However, the plea of guilty but mentally ill was agreed upon after a judge accepted a psychiatrist's evaluation. This designation means Beck will receive psychiatric care during her sentence. Prosecutor Samantha Cauffman stated, “This is a person who is dangerous. Cauffman added "She was sane when she killed them, she knew what she did was wrong, and she’s going to pay for it for the rest of her life,” as per The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Beck's plea spared her family the trial's ordeal, and they were reportedly pleased with the outcome. “To not have to go through that process of a trial, this is wonderful for them,” Cauffman said, in a statement obtained by NBC Philadelphia.
