Drivers on northbound I-79 heading towards Neville Island must seek alternative routes for the next month and a half. According to reports from WPXI, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has shut down the exit ramp to Neville Island as part of a comprehensive deck repair operation, effective Monday night. The ramp will reopen on November 25.
As crews work around the clock, traffic normally diverting to Grand Avenue is redirected. Detailed by PennDOT and reported via a WPXI article, the detour involves staying on northbound I-79, taking the next exit for Route 65/Emsworth/Sewickley, and looping back on the southbound side via Deer Run Road to regain access to Neville Island via Route 51.
This inconvenience is necessary as part of the ongoing $43.9 million "S-Bend" Project on I-79, which aims to revitalize a critical juncture in the region's transportation infrastructure. In addition to the existing ramp closure, milling and paving will take place at three ramps at the Route 51 interchange, and new highway lighting, guardrails, and updated traffic markings and signs will be installed, as reported by WTAE.
For those affected by the ongoing construction, PennDOT suggests using their website, www.511pa.com, to stay abreast of traffic conditions and project updates. In the meantime, local motorists must navigate the detours and plan for potentially longer travel times.
