The U.S. Department of Transportation has tentatively approved Southwest Airlines' proposal for direct flights between Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The airline announced its intention to apply for this route in May, aiming to expand travel options for consumers. A comment period is open until October 30 before a final order is issued, according to a News3LV report.

In addition to the direct Las Vegas-Washington flights, Southwest Airlines plans to offer a one-stop service from DCA to Sacramento via Las Vegas, pending final approval. If approved, Southwest could start this service within 90 days. Currently, American Airlines is the only airline providing daily nonstop flights on the Las Vegas to Reagan National route.

The push for more flight options follows recent legislative actions, particularly the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024. This act has facilitated the possibility of new routes and influenced the Department of Transportation's decisions. According to The Las Vegas Review-Journal, the act expanded Reagan National's restrictive 1,250-mile perimeter rule to allow five additional round trips.

Senator Jacky Rosen and Representative Dina Titus have expressed their support for the DOT's decision, which is expected to boost the travel and tourism sector vital to Las Vegas' economy. Rosen stated, "I’m proud to announce that I helped secure a new direct flight route to Las Vegas from Ronald Reagan National Airport. The addition of this flight will bolster Nevada’s travel and tourism economy that sustains thousands of good-paying jobs." Titus added, "This decision opens the door to bringing more people to experience everything we have to offer in Las Vegas," a statement obtained by the Las Vegas Review-Journal

As the largest operator at Reid International, Southwest will use their Boeing 737-800 jet, which can carry 175 passengers, for the new route. An airline spokesperson stated, "This route will provide consumers with lower average fares and more choice when traveling between these important markets, and we look forward to offering Southwest’s unmatched hospitality, flexible policies, and competitive fares," a statement obtained by the Las Vegas Review-Journal
