In a sad acknowledgment of a public servant's passing, Governor Mike DeWine has directed the flags to be lowered to half-staff across multiple counties in Ohio. This order was issued following the death of former Congressman Dave Hobson, whose life and service to the state have been marked by years of dedicated legislative work. The edict mandates that the American and Ohio state flags be flown at half-staff on all public buildings and grounds within designated counties and several key government buildings, including the Ohio Statehouse until Hobson is laid to rest.
According to an official release from the Mike DeWine Governor's office, Champaign, Clark, Fairfield, Fayette, Franklin, Greene, Logan, Perry, Pickaway, Ross, and Union are the counties explicitly named for this honor. The release highlights that while these areas must adhere to this decree, other Ohio communities are encouraged but not required to similarly lower their flags to half-staff to mourn and simultaneously honor Hobson's public service legacy collectively.
While largely symbolic, the gesture serves to visibly unify the state in a period of collective mourning and reflection on the contributions of one of its long-standing legislators. Flags at the Vern Riffe Center and the Rhodes State Office Tower will also join in this statewide observance. The displays of the flags at half-staff serve as a visual tribute to the gravity of loss felt by the community and the respect accorded to Hobson's decades of service, which spanned state and federal politics.
