An Ohio man, Ronald P. Bedra of Etna, has been handed a 54-month prison sentence for his role in creating and circulating videos that depicted extreme violence and sexual abuse against monkeys. According to court files, Bedra is set for three years of supervised release following his prison term.
Bedra engaged with online groups that facilitated the production and distribution of these heinous acts. Investigations revealed that he, along with his accomplices, directed funds through encrypted chat apps to individuals in Indonesia who carried out the torture on camera. In an alarming instance, he sent a thumb drive loaded with 64 videos containing monkey torture to an associate in Wisconsin, as stated in court documents.
The details of the case are harrowing, including footage of monkeys with their limbs and digits being severed and forced sodomy involving a heated screwdriver. Bedra entered a guilty plea this April. In a statement obtained by the U.S. Department of Justice, Assistant Attorney General Todd Kim condemned the behavior, noting, "Defendant Ronald Bedra commissioned grotesque videos of torture of juvenile and baby monkeys." Such appalling conduct has no place in our society.
U.S. Attorney Kenneth L. Parker also assured that accountability reaches all layers of crime, stating via U.S. Department of Justice, "We will punish participants of sadistic conspiracies like this one no matter their role in the crime." The Special Agent in Charge of FBI’s Cincinnati Field Office, Elena Iatarola, labeled the torture as "disturbing, cruel and illegal," reaffirming the agency's dedication to protecting animals from harm and prosecuting responsible parties.
