Ohio's Appalachian region is slated to see an influx of economic opportunities thanks to a substantial financial boost from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC). Governor Mike DeWine, alongside Lt. Governor Jon Husted and Ohio Department of Development Director Lydia Mihalik, announced the awarding of more than $8.2 million in grants as a part of the federal Partnerships for Opportunity and Workforce and Economic Revitalization (POWER) Initiative. According to Ohio Governor Mike DeWine's recent announcement, these funds are earmarked for eight projects to empower communities hit hard by the coal industry's decline.

The POWER initiative aims to directly counteract job losses in coal-related industries by strategically investing in sectors like advanced manufacturing, healthcare, and workforce development. In a statement obtained by the Governor of Ohio Mike DeWine's office, Governor DeWine said, "In Ohio, we are making significant investments into our Appalachian region, creating a better place to call home, attracting new businesses, and supporting sustainable economic growth." He emphasized the initiative's goal is to "help ensure all Ohioans have the opportunity to live up to their God-given potential."

Funding distribution will specifically target job training and creation, drawing in fresh private investment in once coal-reliant areas. The projects, carefully selected by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine's Office of Appalachia, hinge on collaborative efforts with local development districts. Lt. Governor Husted pointed out, "These funds will support community strategies to build new industries and equip local residents with the skills needed to benefit from upcoming economic development projects."

Lydia Mihalik, clearly optimistic about the area's future, highlighted the collaborative nature of this effort. "By making defining investments like these, Ohio is creating a more vibrant economic future for the people who call Appalachia home," she told the press. The ARC Federal Co-Chair Gayle Manchin added, as per the Governor of Ohio Mike DeWine's Office, "The investments announced in this round of POWER will help train workers, advance new industries, and build upon the progress already being made toward a brighter future full of economic opportunity for our region." This round represents the ARC's most significant POWER investment since its inception in 2015, indicating a substantial commitment to revitalizing Appalachia's economy.
