In a recent crackdown on retail theft, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, along with several partner agencies, carried out "Operation Smash & Grab". The operation, which spanned from September 13 to September 26, focused on addressing a surge in retail thefts throughout San Bernardino County locations including Rancho Cucamonga and Apple Valley, as well as other shopping districts, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.
Investigators from the Sheriff’s Department – Gangs/Narcotics Division, along with the San Bernardino County Probation Department, California Highway Patrol, and other entities, worked together during this period. The results of the operation translated into three felony arrests, 10 misdemeanor arrests, and the recovery of $2,427 in property, as reported by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. In November 2023, authorities had grown increasingly alarmed by the rise of organized theft gangs that not only steal but, also intimidate shoppers through what authorities describe as intimidation tactics and a mob mentality.
"These violent criminals terrorize the citizens of San Bernardino County by utilizing intimidation tactics and a mob mentality that creates an unsafe and uncomfortable shopping environment for our residents," stated the Sheriff’s Department press release. The initiative is part of broader efforts funded by the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors, who have authorized funds specifically aimed at bolstering crime suppression to enhance community quality of life.
