Last evening, a night typically reserved for pre-Halloween festivities, saw the streets of the District of Columbia filled with more than just costumed revelers. Events scattered throughout the city drew crowds engaging in the age-old practice of peaceful assembly, exercising their First Amendment rights in the heart of a nation founded on those principles. Chief Pamela A. Smith stated that the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and their local and federal counterparts ensured safety and security were not lost among the voices and footsteps crowding the streets.
Chief Smith expressed gratitude to the personnel who upheld the order in her statement. She thanked the men and women of the Metropolitan Police Department, along with local and federal partners, for creating a safe environment. However, there were some incidents, as two individuals, whose identities remain undisclosed, were arrested for not complying with lawful orders.
As per MPD's press release, Chief Smith expressed optimism, saying, "We're grateful for everyone’s cooperation and look forward to welcoming more visitors in the months ahead." This sentiment resonates with many as the city showcases democracy in action.
