Last week's late-night incident on Constantine Road has left a pedestrian with life-threatening injuries, according to local authorities. The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office reported that the collision took place around 10:20 p.m. last Thursday when the pedestrian was conversing with a northbound driver who was stationary in a southbound lane. WOODTV detailed that as the southbound driver approached, he was unable to discern which lane the stopped car occupied until it was too late, resulting in the pedestrian being hit after the driver swerved to avoid a direct collision with the stopped vehicle.
The injured pedestrian was airlifted to a hospital for emergency care. On the scene, first responders worked to provide immediate assistance before the transportation. WZZM13 indicated that the drivers involved in the incident were taken to a nearby hospital, though their condition was not specified. Officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, with potential factors such as alcohol or drugs not being ruled out yet.
In addition to the ongoing inquiries concerning the incident's cause, the drivers of both the stopped and the oncoming vehicles were subjected to blood draws to determine if impairment contributed to the tragic event. WNDU highlighted that authorities have not yet established the role that intoxicants might have played in the crash. Clarification regarding this will emerge as the investigation progresses.
