A Pharr resident, age 20, has entered a guilty plea for cocaine distribution conspiracy, announced U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani. Jesus Neftali Padilla, faced with charges of conspiring to possess with the intent to distribute the drug, admitted to orchestrating the trafficking operation, which involved directing drivers past Border Patrol checkpoints and into the interior of the United States, as per U.S. Attorney's Office.

According to court documents, one such operation was intercepted on January 27, 2023, at the Sarita BP checkpoint, where around four kilograms of cocaine were discovered hidden within a vehicle's battery compartment. Following this incident, in March, authorities confiscated an identical amount of cocaine, concealed in a similar manner, from a truck at the same checkpoint. These drugs, prosecutors contend, were destined for Texan cities including San Antonio and Houston.

In his admission, Padilla confirmed his role in coordinating both trafficking instances. According to official statements, he was also involved in modifying car batteries to create secret compartments intended to thwart detection efforts by law enforcement.

Now awaiting sentencing set for January 8, 2025, by U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos, Padilla could be facing life imprisonment and a fine of up to $10 million. Despite the gravity of his situation, he has been granted the liberty to remain on bond until the sentencing hearing. The diligent efforts of the Drug Enforcement Administration and BP brought this case to light, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Patrick Overman and Izaak Bruce leading the prosecution.
