A 33-year-old woman cashed in on a $2 million windfall from the Michigan Lottery. This substantial prize was won through the "Colossal Cashword" game, a scratch-off instant crossword that has gained popularity among lottery enthusiasts since its inception.
The winner, who opted to keep her identity private, purchased the lucrative ticket at Hoffman’s Corner Store on South Westnedge Avenue in Portage. In a statement obtained by ClickOnDetroit, she described the moment she scratched off the barcode and handed it over to the store clerk, "I scratched the barcode right when I bought the ticket and gave it to the clerk to scan it. He handed it back with a slip that said to file a claim at the lottery office and said, ‘You must have won big. You have to go to the lottery office.’” Once she got home and scratched the entire ticket, she realized she'd uncovered a grand total of 10 words—the key to the $2 million jackpot. "I started screaming," she recalled.
The winner opted for a one-time lump sum payment of $1.3 million instead of receiving the full amount through annuity payments, as reported by WZZM13. With financial planning in mind, she voiced intentions to allocate the earnings towards paying bills and set aside the majority for her children's future.
While this story brings attention to the possibility of sudden wealth through the Michigan Lottery, it also serves as a reminder of responsible gambling practices. WOODTV included information on resources for those struggling with gambling addiction, pointing readers towards the National Problem Gambling Helpline, which operates 24/7.
The Michigan Lottery's "Colossal Cashword" has apparently paid out over $59 million in prizes since its launch the previous year, WZZM13 noted. Despite the significant prize won by the Kalamazoo woman, the lottery reported that a couple of $2 million top prizes and multiple $10,000 prizes are still available for lucky players.
