Firefighters from across the region mobilized quickly today to suppress a vegetation fire that erupted near the top of Bald Mountain Peak. Initially reported early in the morning, the blaze, dubbed the #SugarFire, sent plumes of smoke above Adobe Canyon Road, raising immediate concerns about potential spread.

The fire, originally estimated at approximately one acre in size, was described as burning in the grass at a slow rate of spread, with light winds influencing its behavior, according to a CAL FIRE Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit Facebook update. CAL FIRE's coordinated response included six engines, two bulldozers, hand crews from the Hood Mountain Fire Center, and air support consisting of two fixed-wing aircraft and a helicopter to combat the fire. The air support was integral in containing the blaze.

The combined efforts of aerial and ground teams proved effective, as another update from CAL FIRE Sonoma-Lake-Napa-Unit indicated significant progress. "The fire has been held by retardant dropped by Airtanker 85 on all sides and the Boggs Copter helitack crew on the ground took direct action on the fire by cutting line with hand tools," the agency reported.
