North Carolina is seeing a significant turnout for the 2024 general election, with preliminary data from the State Board showing that around 3.2 million voters, or 40.7 percent of registered voters, had cast their ballots by noon Tuesday. According to the State Board of Elections, this includes various methods of voting.
In-person early voting boasts the highest numbers with 3,013,104 ballots, while absentee votes come in from civilians, overseas, and the military at 148,223; 15,364, and 4,801, respectively. It's important to note, these numbers might not fully represent the actual turnout as there is often a delay before county boards of elections update the State Board with the latest data. Early voting this year has seen an 11.9 percent increase over the same period in 2020, which is particularly noteworthy considering the uptick of registered voters.
The State Board's website offers thorough and updated daily PDF turnout reports which delve into demographics including voting methods and political party affiliation. Furthermore, despite being affected by Hurricane Helene, turnout in 25 Western North Carolina counties is exceeding the statewide turnout, an admirable facet in the face of adversity.
In-person early voting will continue until the upcoming Saturday, with varying sites and schedules depending on the county. Given the logistical differences, some counties do not provide Sunday voting opportunities. For a detailed lookup of county-by-county schedules, interested parties can make use of the Early Voting Site Search tool available on the State Board's website.
