The Sacramento City Council has shown its commitment to addressing homelessness by unanimously approving $1.5 million in funding for the North 5th Street Navigation Center. This contract with The Gathering Inn will support operations for the next five months, using funds from California's Homeless Housing, Assistance, and Prevention Program (HHAP), according to the Sacramento City Express.

The Navigation Center at 700 North Fifth St. is a key part of Sacramento's strategy to reduce homelessness. It aims to provide not just temporary shelter, but also essential services and support to help guests transition to stable housing. "The North 5th Street Navigation Center is a key part of how we’re addressing homelessness in the city," Brian Pedro, director of the City’s Department of Community Response, told Sacramento City Express. "Shelters like this provide crucial support, helping people take steps toward permanent housing."

The center operates 24/7 and can accommodate up to 163 adult men and women. It provides meals and case management to help individuals access stable income, public benefits, and community services. Since early 2020, the center has assisted 1,574 people, with 343 achieving positive outcomes and 234 securing stable, permanent housing. These efforts are part of the Regionally Coordinated Homelessness Action Plan (RCHAP), a county-wide initiative.

The city provides around 1,350 emergency beds each night. The City Council’s funding for the Navigation Center aims to use HHAP-5 funds for an additional seven-month operational extension, pending announcements expected later this month. This initiative offers immediate relief and lays the groundwork for a better future for Sacramento's homeless population, supporting the goals of RCHAP and demonstrating the city's commitment to effectively addressing the homelessness crisis.
