The city of San Antonio has chosen Jonathan Gary as the new leader of its Animal Care Services, set to assume his role on December 30. With an extensive 25-year background in animal welfare exclusively with the City of Oklahoma City, Gary has been entrusted with the responsibility to guide Animal Care Services forward. Eric Walsh, San Antonio City Manager, in a nationwide search that attracted over 100 candidates, found Gary's experience unparalleled, involving medical, supervisory, and operational roles within a municipal animal welfare context, according to the City of San Antonio.

Gary, in his previous position as the director of City of Oklahoma's Animal Welfare Division, was lauded for amplifying the city's save rate for animals, setting records with over 15,000 saved lives. His career trajectory – detailed by the  City of San Antonio official website – is a testament to his deep roots in the field, having evolved from roles such as an animal shelter worker to vet assistant, before rising to his most recent directorship.

Walsh has expressed his firm belief in Gary's capabilities. "I have total confidence in Mr. Gary’s ability to lead Animal Care Services in its mission to protect both the animals and the residents of our community," he said according to the City of San Antonio. Gary's balanced focus on public safety and animal humane treatment was a critical factor in his selection. His strong rapport with the local rescue community, acquired through strategic, community-oriented initiatives, has also been highlighted as a significant asset.

Rita Braeutigam, Chair of the Animal Care Services Advisory Board, echoed similar sentiments regarding the anticipation of Gary's arrival. "We look forward to welcoming Jonathan Gary as the new Director of Animal Care Services," Braeutigam stated. "His 25 years of municipal shelter experience are invaluable. These talents will help us work united on behalf the of our pets, our partners, and our community," as per the City of San Antonio. This transition comes as interim Animal Care Services Director Mike Shannon prepares to return to his prior role as Development Services Director in January 2025.

The decision for Gary's appointment followed an exhaustive interview process, as recounted by the city's website, involving Animal Care Services Advisory Board members, community stakeholders, and City Executive staff. San Antonio now looks to Gary's tenure as the new director to continue the department's progression in animal care and community safety.
