Following a lengthy legal process, Olanda Taylor has been sentenced to life in prison for the 2016 murder of convenience store clerk Zachary Benavidez. The sentencing took place in the 175th Judicial District Court after Taylor opted not to proceed with a previous plea deal that would have required him to testify against co-defendant D'Anthony Carter. According to KSAT, Taylor could have faced a shorter term of 50 years but chose to disengage with the deal, possibly due to contemplation about its personal implications.
The criminal chain of events had initially culminated with Benavidez being shot seven times during a struggle to prevent the robbery at the Diamond Food Mart on Vance Jackson Road. A customer was also injured in the incident. Taylor, along with Carter, was charged for these violent acts. Despite Taylor's initial claim of innocence in a 2016 jailhouse interview with KSAT, according to same source, he was later found to have confessed to the crime. However, Carter's case was dismissed due to insufficient evidence, after a history of attorney changes and a reduction in bond that enabled his release earlier in April.
Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales expressed his position regarding the outcome, "Today’s life sentence reinforces our commitment to holding violent offenders accountable," he stated in a release obtained by KSAT. Gonzales added, "While we cannot undo the loss of Zachary Benavidez’s life, we will continue to stand with his family and all victims, fighting for justice and accountability."
Joe Gonzales emphasized the district's commitment to justice and its strong stance against violent crime, as reported by Here's San Antonio.
