The city of San Marcos is currently under scrutiny, as the San Marcos Police Department (SMPD) investigates a series of alarming threats directed at supporters of Vice President Kamala Harris. According to reports by KXAN, the department had discovered at least five flyers by Saturday, with the first reports coming in the previous Friday. SMPD Chief Stan Standridge explained, “We’re trying to identify the scope of how many flyers have been disseminated across San Marcos.” He also noted that the Federal Bureau of Investigation had been notified, alongside regional fusion centers.
The menacing flyers, which were affixed to residents' political signs bore a message stating that the resident was now in a "national database”, and threatened an impending IRS tax audit. Standridge emphasized the gravity of the situation by acknowledging, "It’s a crime in the state of Texas to try to influence or coerce or even prevent a voter from voting,.” The team at SMPD is determined to bring the culprits to justice and will liaise with the district attorney’s office to deliberate on applicable charges, KXAN further detailed.
A separate account from FOX7 Austin provides additional context, with the SMPD having shared a photo of one of the flyers on an Oct. 26 Facebook post. This particular flyer issued a more sinister warning, threatening Kamala Harris supporters with IRS tax audits going all the way back to your very first tax return, explicitly mentioning a victory by former President Donald Trump in November as a condition for these audits.
SMPD has issued a public advisory for residents encountering these flyers: do not attempt to remove them. Instead, they are to contact the police, and officers will come to remove the flyer themselves. This protocol is part of the ongoing investigation as the police work thrice as hard, to identify those behind the threats. Residents can reach out to the agency's non-emergency number, 512-753-2108, for assistance, according to KXAN.
