A tragic incident unfolded late Thursday night on Santa Monica Beach when a man was fatally struck by an SUV. According to KTLA, emergency responders arrived at the scene near the Santa Monica Pier around 11:30 p.m., where they found the victim lifeless under the vehicle. A beachgoer described witnessing the vehicle, "I just happened to be looking that way and I see these lights coming around the corner of the bathroom and it got stuck."
Witnesses also reported to FOX LA that the man behind the wheel was driving recklessly on the sand moments before the pedestrian was hit. "We were just passing by walking our dog and I saw the car stuck out there," said Santa Monica resident Shyler Compton. "I saw the car doors opened and it looked like there were a bunch of people running away from that car."
The driver of the silver SUV remained at the scene and, was taken into custody on undisclosed charges, reported NBC Los Angeles. Speculation surrounds whether the driver was under the influence, though Santa Monica Police have yet to release details on the matter.
