Big news for Santa Rosa as the city has officially completed the purchase of the 49-acre Southeast Greenway property from the California Transportation Commission (CTC), paving the way for a new, sprawling urban park. According to a statement released by the city, the $1.83 million deal was wrapped up today, setting a landmark achievement in the city's history. The planned park will feature walking and bike trails, ballparks, and open natural spaces in the heart of east Santa Rosa, with a portion devoted to much-needed affordable housing.

Described as a "one-of-kind urban park," this project exemplifies partnership involving many collaborators. "Santa Rosa’s urban wonderland is official!" said Senate President pro-Tempore Mike McGuire, as the City of Santa Rosa quoted. McGuire expressed gratitude towards the collaborative efforts that breathed life into the Southeast Greenway dream, hinting at a bright future for families and the local community's quality of life. The urban oasis will also include 10 acres dedicated to affordable housing, addressing the pressing need for spaces that cater to seniors and working families.

City Manager Maraskeshia Smith mentioned, according to the City of Santa Rosa, "The acquisition of the Southeast Greenway property is a pivotal step in our city's ongoing efforts to enhance public spaces and improve quality of life.” These efforts, Smith noted, are the fruits of years of collaboration between various agencies and groups. Funding for the park came from a blend of grants and community donations, with significant contributions from the Sonoma County Ag + Open Space and multiple other foundations and individual donors.

Misti Arias, General Manager of Ag + Open Space, told the City of Santa Rosa, "The Southeast Greenway project is a prime example of what our Community Spaces matching grant program was created to do - to conserve open space in the hearts of our communities and towns and to support innovative projects that reflect the needs and vision of Sonoma County’s diverse communities.” The project, which has involved everything from government agencies and community groups to funders, is seen as an essential piece of infrastructure, particularly in the face of climate resilience challenges.
