
In a move to bolster leadership within the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction, Shakitha Johnson has been promoted to the pivotal role of Judicial District Manager (JDM) for District 20, according to an announcement by the department. This area spans Anson, Richmond, Stanly, and Union counties, where she will now manage a team of 70 probation/parole officers. These professionals are tasked with the supervision of over 2,375 individuals currently under some form of state-mandated community surveillance, including probation, parole, or post-release monitoring.
Todd Ishee, the secretary for the NC Department of Adult Correction spoke highly of the new appointee, stating, "Shakitha Johnson is driven by hard work and dedication to ensure community safety and oversee our officers who supervise offenders." Johnson brings a wide array of skills and experience to the table, assets that have been recognized by higher-ups within the NCDAC.
Her ascent to this critical leadership position is the culmination of a career steeped in dedication and service. Johnson began her journey with the department in 2007 as a probation/parole officer in Mecklenburg County. Throughout her tenure, Johnson engaged in numerous field operations, served as a vital mentor, and played a role in important department initiatives such as the Evidence Based Practice sustainability team and the initial officer safety committee. Her rise through the ranks saw her achieve the role of chief probation/parole officer (CPPO) in District 27 before being honored as District 26, Chief of the Year in 2022. Prior to her latest promotion, Johnson was serving as an assistant judicial district manager in District 26, based in Mecklenburg County.
According to officials from the NC Department of Adult Correction, Johnson's educational background includes a robust foundation in criminal justice, with both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from the University of Cincinnati, equipping her with the knowledge, to effectively lead her district.
The Deputy Secretary for Community Supervision, Tracy K. Lee expressed confidence in Johnson's abilities, stating on NC Department of Adult Correction, "I am very pleased to promote Shakitha Johnson. She’s has shown great commitment and dedication to her career. Being a JDM is a challenging position, but I know she’s up to the task and will do a great job."
