A St. Cloud man has been meted a decade-long prison sentence for his unlawful advances towards a minor online. Daniel Michael Mohat, 27, faced the gavel of U.S. District Judge Marcia Morales Howard and will now serve 10 years behind bars for attempted online enticement of a minor to participate in illicit sexual activity, as per the recent developments in a case that has been unfolding since last year.

Mohat's plea of guilt was recorded on July 2nd, 2024, setting the stage for his sentencing after a period of detainment that began with his arrest on January 5, 2023, his conversations with whom he believed to be a 14-year-old girl, which were in reality exchanges with an undercover agent during a sting operation aimed at identifying individuals preying on juveniles for sexual activities, the agent and Mohat engaged in discussions of a sexual nature and on several instances he requested explicit videos, the plea agreement revealed.

The undercover operation, executed out of Nassau County, Florida, and spearheaded by multi-agency collaboration, utilized the reach and anonymity of social media for its sting. It successfully exposed Mohat's criminal intent, which culminated in him soliciting sexually explicit material from the supposed teenager.

Anchor institutions such as the Naval Criminal Investigative Service and the Federal Bureau of Investigation dedicated their expertise to scrutinize the case, resulting in a collaborative effort that put Mohat on trial and his subsequent conviction, illustrating once more the grave consequences awaiting those who venture into the exploitation of minors online, this prosecution was carried by Assistant United States Attorney David B. Mesrobian.

As highlighted by the U.S. Attorney's Office, Mohat's conviction is part of the wider crusadeed by Project Safe Childhood—a nationwide initiative unveiled in 2006 by the Department of Justice. The project assembles a bevy of resources from various government tiers to combat and reduce the prevalence of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Project Safe Childhood continues to focus on the apprehension and prosecution of offenders, while also striving to rescue and support child victims caught in these heinous acts.
