Macomb County has marked a significant step forward in fostering STEM careers by launching the new Macomb Automation and Robotics Zone (MARZ). Situated in Sterling Heights at the Advanced Manufacturing Commercialization Center, the ribbon-cutting on Oct. 18 ushered in a new era of collaborative efforts between business, education, and economic development sectors.

This center, operated by SAE Government Technologies (SAE GT), will focus on innovating manufacturing practices, workforce training, and developing necessary standards for modernization. Mark Pickett, Technology Transfer Program Manager at SAE GT, shared his enthusiasm stating, "SAE is excited about the impact this space will have on participating students." According to Macomb County government's release, Pickett emphasizes the combined efforts of MARZ and SAE's long-standing STEM programs aimed at enriching talent development.

The county anticipates a surge in STEM career opportunities, with an estimated 87,000 jobs being available in the upcoming decades, aligning perfectly with MARZ's objectives. The grand opening showcased impressive new resources for student teams, including a regulation-sized field for robotics practice, funded by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s Office of Defense and Aerospace Innovation and BAE Systems.

In addition to the practice field, MARZ boasts other high-tech tools such as a CNC machine and a 3D printer to bolster team preparations and competitiveness. "Since 2022 alone, MARZ has hosted more than 50 outreach workshops for over 300 students," Vicky Rowinski, Director of Macomb County Planning and Economic Development, highlighted the organization's engagement with the youth, pointing to its vital role in providing resources and support for team members. The center's operation heavily relies on contributions, with the GM Foundation, Verizon, AT&T, ITC Holdings, and more being recognized for their support during the event, as detailed by Macomb County.

MARZ operates as a 501(c)(3) entity established by local institutions, including Macomb Community College and Macomb Intermediate School District, with an aim to elevate exposure to advanced manufacturing and robotics for K-12 students. Through workshops, grants, and collaboration with industry professionals, MARZ seeks to reach into underserved areas and catalyze interest in STEM fields, ensuring a robust pipeline of future experts in the sector.
