Texas Governor Greg Abbott has made an announcement, marking an important development for the music scene in Sugar Land. The city has completed a rigorous multi-step certification process and has now been recognized as a Music Friendly Texas Certified Community by the Texas Music Office (TMO), as reported by the Office of the Texas Governor. The TMO program, unique since its inauguration in 2016, is aimed at growing the music business and encouraging economic progress in the state.
"Music is key to the Texas brand and is deeply rooted in the cultural traditions of our great state," Abbott said, as per the official announcement. He added that Music Friendly Texas Communities, like Sugar Land, are essential to fostering local job creation, as well as broader economic growth. Under TMO's guidance, the Texas music industry indeed boasts more than 192,000 jobs and contributes over $26 billion annually to the state's economy.
In a statement made by the Governor's Office, Senator Lois W. Kolkhorst congratulated Sugar Land on its achievement and highlighted the positive effects of quality musical experiences on local economies. Similarly, Representative Gary Gates noted the substantial role music plays in supporting small businesses and driving tourism. The official certification ceremony is scheduled to take place at Oyster Creek Park, during Sugar Land’s Summer of Sound event. Set for October 26 at 7:45 PM, the celebration is expected to draw city officials, community leaders, and the public.
