On Saturday during North Carolina Central University’s "Ultimate Homecoming Experience," reports of an active shooter led to two alerts. Officials issued the first alert at about 7:43 p.m. and quickly arrested the suspect, according to an CBS17 report. A second report of gunfire before 9 p.m., just after the first alert was lifted. A suspect is now in custody.
While no gunshot-related injuries were reported, authorities were dealing with "several medical emergencies" in the aftermath. "We didn't really hear anything, but we just saw a whole bunch of people running, so we started running," freshman Jayla Boon told WRAL. Campus officials have not yet provided details about these medical emergencies.
North Carolina Central University student Noriya Stiff noted that such incidents are uncommon at the university. "We normally don't have crazy things like this on campus," she said. "But then again, we have to look at the city we're in. It does make me want to stay safe and protect myself," as stated by WRAL.
The North Carolina Central daily crime log reported gunshots from the Debra Saunders-White Residence Hall parking lot. After an initial alert was lifted at 8:10 p.m., there was another report of shots fired at 231 Eagle Campus Drive. Campus police and Durham Police Department are investigating and will share updates as they have more information, as CBS17 reported.
