Two suspects, Cristian Rios Cuadros and Johan Fonseca Garcia, both aged 22, have been placed under arrest following a series of pickpocket incidents targeting the elderly in Southern California, as per a news release by the Ventura County Sheriff's Office. These individuals from Inglewood and Hawthorne, respectively, were apprehended after a collaborative investigation by the East County Investigations - Property Crimes Unit, Thousand Oaks Patrol, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

It all came to light when authorities were notified on September 26, about an elderly victim who had been subjected to theft while shopping at a Vons in Thousand Oaks. The authorities were then able to swiftly catch the suspects who were in the act to try and steal from another senior at a separate store in Los Angeles County. This arrest took place on September 24, indicating a fast response by law enforcement, according to the Ventura County Sheriff's Office.

As outlined by detectives, the charges brought against Rios Cuadros and Fonseca Garcia involve conspiracy to commit a crime, burglary, and elder abuse - showcasing a disturbing pattern of preying upon vulnerable community members. "On 10/1/2024, Detectives obtained arrest warrants for Cuadros and Garcia.  The charges filed against Cuadros and Garcia by the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office included PC 182(a)(1) – Felony conspiracy to commit a crime, PC 459 – Felony burglary, and PC 368(d) – Misdemeanor elder abuse," the official statement detailed.

Currently, the duo remains in custody of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. They are expected to eventually be transferred to Ventura County Sheriff’s Office after their release in Los Angeles County. The police in Thousand Oaks have taken this opportunity to remind their community to keep in vigilant and to report any suspicious activity. Detective Kevin Walters stated, "The city of Thousand Oaks is an extremely safe community.  However, this sense of safety is occasionally exploited by the criminal element," emphasizing the importance of continued vigilance.
