Tesla is gearing up for a significant expansion at its Texas Gigafactory located in east Travis County, proposing the addition of 5.2 million square feet of space. According to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation filings, the expansion projects are cryptically named Drive Unit, Paint, and Plastics—though little detail is given on what each entails. The expansion is slated for completion by the end of 2025, per KXAN, a timeline that parallels CEO Elon Musk's ambitious plans to produce two million autonomous robotaxis, dubbed Cybercabs, each year.
Following the revelations of the expansion, local concerns have surfaced. Ariana Mata, who has a vantage point of the Gigafactory from her backyard, shared her experience, "It’s going to mean more businesses are coming," she initially thought, as stated by KXAN. However, her tune changed as the reality of living by a mega-factory took hold, with large machinery and ongoing nightly operations disturbing the peace, Mata resorted to planting trees to regain some semblance of it.
Further details about this expansion were also reported by KVUE, indicating that the filings describe the work to be "ground up and complete the interior finish out of the electric vehicle manufacturing facility." This points to a massive scale operation, as Tesla aims to buttress its manufacturing capabilities in the rapidly growing central Texas region.
Mata told KXAN, "The next plan that I have is potentially to put a gazebo or something where I can block that middle section of my fence so I don’t have to see all of that."
