Texas is on high alert as the iWatchTexas program, an initiative by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), reported a significant increase in school safety-related reports for September 2024. In an unprecedented uptick, more than double the figures from previous years have been observed, according to the DPS. Last month, 204 school safety-related reports were logged, a sharp rise from the 89 and 63 reports received in the same month in 2023 and 2022, respectively.

DPS Director Steven McCraw spoke on the pressing concern for communal vigilance, emphasizing that, "Looking out for one another – especially in the face of serious threats – is embedded in the spirit of Texas." McCraw continued to assert in a statement that was according to DPS, "Last month’s record number of reports is a testament to the vigilance we have, and need to have, as Texans speak up to help ensure that their families, friends and neighborhoods stay safe." The majority of the reports in September pertained to threats or potential planned attacks targeting school campuses.

Per DPS’ Intelligence and Counterterrorism Division (ICT), this surge in reporting can be largely attributed to an increased public awareness regarding the existence of iWatchTexas and the importance of staying vigilant, especially concerning schools. iWatchTexas serves as a community-based reporting system crafted to assist Texans in notifying authorities about any suspicious activities they believe might indicate criminal or terrorist threats, comprising of threats to school safety.

Indeed, the essence of the program is to encourage individuals to promptly report alarming behavior or activity. From comments on social media hinting at possible school attacks to inquiries about security features that seem out of place, the program seeks to give citizens a means to pass on crucial information to trained analysts. These analysts then collaborate with local, state, and federal agencies to appropriately evaluate and respond to these potential dangers. Citizens can easily report such observations via the iWatchTexas app or by calling the hotline at 1-844-643-2251.

In a proactive move to further bolster awareness, DPS has recently launched a podcast detailing the iWatchTexas program and its integral role in preventing threats to public safety. The public is urged to download the app, available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play, at no cost. However, the DPS reminds citizens that for immediate emergencies, calling 911 is still the most direct line to receiving emergency assistance.
