Texans needing to renew or replace their driver's licenses or identification cards have a little more flexibility, as the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is extending service hours into the weekends for October. According to a recent announcement, select DPS offices across the state will be open for half-days on Saturdays—specifically on October 5, 12, 19, and 26. Those needing these services can schedule appointments online for these additional slots.
Given the state's vast geography, DPS has ensured participating offices cover all regions making the weekend services accessible to a broader section of the population. The initiative, not only applies to renewals and replacements, but appointments for new Texas resident driver's license and identification card services may also be available, depending on the location. Interested customers can check availability and book their slots through the Texas DPS - Schedule Appointment portal.
This move by DPS to open on Saturdays follows similar efforts last month to accommodate more customers. Nevertheless, while these additional opportunities were well-received, with many appointments being booked, the no-show rate for the month of September was around 30 percent—a staggering figure suggesting that for every three appointments made, one was unattended without cancellation.
The department stresses the importance of canceling appointments if customers can no longer attend. "The department would like to remind customers who have appointments and can no longer keep them to please cancel them so that they can then be used by other customers who are available and would like to take advantage," read a statement from the DPS. A not insignificant no-show rate impacts DPS's ability to serve Texans efficiently, thus this reminder to the public is being strongly emphasized.
For a list of driver's license offices offering Saturday appointments this October, customers can refer to the DPS news release. All services provided on Saturdays will require an appointment, and no walk-ins will be accommodated. Detailed information about DPS driver's license services, including what documents to bring to an appointment, can be found on the department's website as well. Texas residents who need to take care of driver's license or ID card services now have the chance to do so on weekends, easing the strain on both the DPS and those with weekday commitments.
