In a formal acknowledgment of his service and leadership, Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Director Steven C. McCraw was honored at his final Public Safety Commission (PSC) meeting before retiring later this year. As reported by the DPS, the ceremony included the naming of the Texas department's new training facility after him, marking his 15-year legacy.
The forthcoming training center, to be named the Steven C. McCraw Law Enforcement Academy and Training Center, is located in Williamson County and is poised to become one of the foremost training grounds for law enforcement in the state. "Steven McCraw has made an extraordinary and everlasting impact on the Texas Department of Public Safety," Public Safety Commission Chairman Steven P. Mach said, as attendees looked to continue honoring the director by dedicating the new space to his namesake. It will quickly break ground this winter and aims to zealously enhance the quality of education and preparation for the state's law enforcement recruits.
The recognition extended even further, with proclamations from Governor Greg Abbott and Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, expressing gratitude for McCraw's transformative impact on DPS. Adding to these accolades, McCraw was designated an honorary Texas Ranger Captain by the Texas Ranger Division, celebrating his service and commitment to the legacy of the distinguished law enforcement group.
A symbolic nod from the Texas State Troopers Association (TSTA) also came in the form of "The Blue Shield" award, which acknowledges a public servant's dedication to upholding law enforcement integrity. The award was presented to McCraw during the PSC meeting, an occasion where multiple factions within the Texas law enforcement and political spheres gathered to celebrate one of their own. Photos and a recording of the event were made available to the public, sharing the moments when McCraw was formally recognized for his years of service before he continued to serve until a successor was appointed.
