With the arrival of Halloween, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is stepping up to ensure that the revelries remain safe for everyone involved. In a press statement, the DPS imparted several guidelines for Texans to heed while participating in the holiday's activities, including trick-or-treating and other celebratory events. DPS Director Steven McCraw underlined the importance of these precautions, stating, "We know many Texans, young and old, will be out celebrating Halloween this year. We ask that you take some simple safety measures – like staying visible, traveling in groups and remaining alert – so that everyone is safe and Halloween remains an enjoyable night for all across the state."
DPS offered specific advice for drivers to help keep the roads safe. They urged people to not drink and drive, to always buckle up, and to slow down to accommodate the increased pedestrian traffic. They also emphasized the necessity to always remain attentive and minimize distractions, such as mobile devices. According to the DPS website, Texas law prohibits the use of portable wireless devices to read, write or send an electronic message unless the vehicle is stopped. The DPS reminds drivers to have the Texas Roadside Assistance number, 1-800-525-5555, saved in their phones just in case they encounter any issues on the road.
For those trick-or-treating on Halloween night, DPS recommended costumes that are bright and reflective, the use of face paint over vision-obscuring masks, and carrying lights or glow sticks to increase visibility. It's crucial for both children and adults to stay on sidewalks, cross at designated crosswalks, and travel in familiar neighborhoods with adult supervision. DPS also suggests arranging a meet-up location in case of separation and inspecting all treats before consumption.
Additionally, DPS advised the public to be aware of their surroundings and to use the Texas Public Sex Offender Registry, which provides a map of where registered sex offenders reside in a given area. In an effort to prevent dangerous situations, Texans are urged to also utilize the iWatchTexas program to report any suspicious activity. As DPS Director McCraw stated, "iWatchTexas is not for emergencies. If there is an emergency, call 911 immediately." Residents can report tips through the website, the program's free mobile app or by calling 844-643-2251, with an assurance of confidentiality.
This week, the DPS has announced that they will be launching a series of Halloween safety tip videos, which will be made available across the department's social media channels. For access to these videos and more information, members of the public can visit the DPS website.
