A woman's sentence has been finalized for the gruesome act of setting two puppies on fire in Toledo, Ohio. As reported by FOX19, Aaliyah (Anastasia), Phillips was given one year and one day behind bars yesterday after reaching a plea agreement earlier this year. The conviction pertains to charges of both animal crushing and distribution of a controlled substance, precisely substances containing fentanyl.
The dreadful incident occurred in July of last year when Phillips threw two American Bulldog puppies into a fire across the street from where she was staying, according to WTOL. Witnesses informed the dogs' owner the following morning, with one neighbor having witnessed the act. The bereaved owner found his pets deceased and severely burned.
Under the terms of her plea deal, Phillips accepted guilt on June 18, as reflected in federal court records mentioned by FOX19. Following her sentence, she must undergo three years of supervised release. Judge James Knepp handed down this decision in a Toledo courtroom yesterday.
These events add a chilling dimension to ongoing discussions about animal welfare and the consequences for those who perpetrate such acts of cruelty. As described by WHIO, the dogs' owner, upon learning of Philips' actions, showed officers the puppies, "who were dead and severely burned."
