Travis County Sheriff's Office (TCSO) in conjunction with Austin Community College District (ACC) has announced an initiative aimed at ensuring inmates at the Travis County Correctional Complex are offered tangible job skills in office professionalism. The program has been designed to provide graduates with the necessary expertise to secure employment that promises a more stable future. According to a press release from the TCSO, local businesses are on board to present job opportunities to those who complete the course.
In a press briefing scheduled for Wednesday, Sheriff Sally Hernandez is expected to lay out details on how the jail is accommodating the partnership, which inmates are eligible to take part, and how this initiative is positioned to benefit not just the participants but also their families and the wider community, as per the TCSO. The educational facility established within the correctional complex includes computers and professional instructors from ACC, creating a fully-functional learning environment right within the jail walls.
Deborah Benavidez, Department Chair/Associate Professor at ACC’s Office of Administration & Technology, will provide insights into the origins of the program, its funding avenues, the skills taught, and the approach to forging business connections. More details on the partnership are to be unveiled during the briefing, with B-roll being made available courtesy of TCSO.
