Two men, wanted on separate outstanding felony warrants for sex-related offenses involving a child, were arrested this past weekend by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas Port of Entry. The arrests highlight the ongoing efforts of border security personnel to apprehend individuals accused of egregious crimes.
According to a report from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the first apprehension took place on Saturday. Manuel Cuevas, a 62-year-old U.S. citizen, was referred to swiftly undergo secondary inspection at Hidalgo International Bridge where officers confirmed his identity and active warrant for child fondling through biometric verification and federal databases.
The following day, a similar scene unfolded when Humberto Juarez, 43, also a U.S. citizen, found himself subject to a secondary inspection. The CBP officers duly utilizing biometric data apprehended Juarez, discovering an existing warrant for aggravated sexual assault of a child issued by the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office.
Both men were handed over to the Hidalgo County sheriff's deputies to proceed with the adjudication of the warrants. Port Director Carlos Rodriguez emphasized the importance of these detentions, stating to the CBP official website, "The heinous nature of the alleged crime and the dedication of our frontline officers to bringing such alleged perpetrators to justice underscore and exemplify the importance of CBP’s border security mission." His comment hints at the grave responsibility that officers carry in protecting the vulnerable and maintaining public safety.
While criminal charges have been levied against Cuevas and Juarez, it should be recognized that these charges are merely allegations. Until proven guilty in a court of law, both defendants are presumed innocent. The recent arrests demonstrate the critical role that border security plays in the apprehension of individuals charged with severe crimes, and stands as a testament to the vigilance of the CBP officers in their ongoing duties.
