In the southwest region of the city, Vanessa Flores is grappling with the loss of her sister Maria, who was found shot to death at an apartment complex on Concourse Drive one month ago. "What happened? 'Like, what's going on?' Let us know what happened. We really don't know what's going on," Flores said, according to an interview with ABC13. The Houston Police Department has yet to apprehend the suspect who was captured on surveillance walking alongside Maria, just before her death.
As each day passes without an arrest, Flores holds tightly to her sister's memory, wearing a shirt to honor Maria's life. "Out of all of us, she was the bubbly one with the biggest heart. If the room was quiet, she would come out and make jokes, make people laugh," she recounted sorrowfully. Leaning on the support of her children, she remains determined to find closure, and she implored the yet-to-be-found gunman in a statement obtained by ABC13: "I just want justice for her. I want the person that did it to her. If he did have a heart, to turn himself in. Do it. He messed up our life. We will never be the same because of him."
Meanwhile, in a parallel struggle for justice, the family of 27-year-old Kenia Guardado is facing a similar heartache. Guardado was last seen in early morning hours on surveillance video walking with a man near her apartment on Forum Park Drive. The following day, Guardado was found dead inside her apartment, also, a victim of a fatal shooting. According to KHOU, her family made the gruesome discovery after she failed to pick her child up from the babysitter. The man seen with Guardado is considered a person of interest, as police reach out to the public for assistance in identifying him.
