Two Wake Forest residents, Ellen Turco and Pat Schell, have been recognized for their strong commitment and contributions. They have been named the 2024 recipients of the Robert E. Stipe Award for Professional Preservation Excellence, given by Preservation North Carolina to honor those dedicated to preserving history. Town of Wake Forest official announcement noted that Michelle Michael, the 2023 award recipient, praised Turco and Schell for their professional efforts that often exceed expectations.
Turco, an architectural historian, and Schell, a restoration contractor, are known for their restoration work across North Carolina and their dedication to the community. Turco has served six years on the Wake Forest Historic Preservation Commission, while Schell has been involved in the Ailey Young House Rehabilitation Project. Their expertise has provided valuable guidance in preservation efforts. They will receive recognition at an annual conference on Wednesday, as stated by the Town of Wake Forest.
The Town of Wake Forest will celebrate its history as the Ailey Young House receives the 2024 Gertrude S. Carraway Award of Merit on the same day. After significant rehabilitation, the house is set to be the centerpiece of a new park project for the Northeast Community. The awards, named after renowned historian and preservationist Dr. Gertrude S. Carraway, represent the collective effort to preserve our shared history. For more details about their achievements and the upcoming conference, interested parties can contact Michelle Michael via email.
