Waukesha County Executive Paul Farrow announced last night the postponement of a decision on a proposed 0.5% sales tax that would have been a first for the county. Citing the need for more public discourse and education regarding the county's financial challenges, Farrow called the move "democracy in action," according to a statement released and obtained by WISN. The tax was slated to take effect on July 1, 2025, and add to Wisconsin's existing 5% state sales tax.

The decision to remove the tax ordinance from last night's meeting was met with a mixed response, with attendees like Brody Jones expressing frustration at the late notice after having reshuffled his schedule, "What are we doing here? I took my night. I had other plans I cancelled tonight to be here," Jones told CBS58. Some residents who turned out for what was projected to be a heated discussion left feeling blindsided by the absence of the agenda item.

Many residents first learned of the tax proposal through informal channels such as talk radio, with a lack of official communication from the county. "I didn’t get anything in the mail, no. I live in Mukwonago, and I didn't get a single thing," shared Jones in a CBS58 interview. Despite the Waukesha County Business Alliance's call to "slow down and evaluate" the tax, as reported by FOX6 News, residents like David Gonzalez are hopeful, stating, "Heard we got the delay, which is a blessing, for sure, and so now hopefully, they can make their case for it."

The ordinance was intended to alleviate property taxes, however, there's skepticism regarding the actual benefit to taxpayers. Greg Nickels voiced a common concern, "But again, you're taking it out of one pocket. Tell me you're gonna put it in the other? I just don't see that happening," Nickels told CBS58. Yet the reinstatement of the proposal, remains unscheduled.
