The historic rivalry between the University of Michigan and Michigan State University football teams is slated to add another chapter, this time under the lights in Ann Arbor. The Big Ten has designated that the two teams will face each other at 7:30 p.m. on October 26 at Michigan Stadium, with the game being aired on the Big Ten Network. As noted by The Detroit News, this game marks the seventh evening game of the season for the Spartans, and their fifth consecutive one, while the Wolverines are just coming off a bye week.
The backdrop of this year's clash includes a tapestry of recent memorable moments between these teams, as reported by the Detroit Free Press. Last season, Michigan blanked their in-state rivals 49-0 in East Lansing, the largest shutout in this contest in over 50 years. The year prior, Michigan's 29-7 victory was overshadowed by an altercation involving players from both teams. According to Michigan State coach Jonathan Smith, "We don't control it. You'd love to have a little bit of a mix, but we're going to line up and play anytime that they let us."
The current season narratives for the teams differ, with Michigan experiencing a lukewarm performance and holding on to a lower rung in the AP top 25, and Michigan State seeing a sliding trend after an initially promising 3-0 start. ClickOnDetroit notes that despite the possibility of the matchup being less intense due to standings, the anticipated electric night game atmosphere at the Big House could still provide excitement for fans on both sides.
Smith's thoughts on the frequent night games were detailed in his comments to the Detroit Free Press: "Night games are what they are," he said. "We don't control the kickoff times, so you gotta approach it with knowing when the kickoff is. It's really about the back end of the game, right? So you kick off late, you finish late. And so the turnaround time, the recovery time, you try to emphasize that." The ongoing season continues, with games for each team sitting undecided, as Michigan plans to host No. 21 Illinois this Saturday and Michigan State is set to face off against Iowa the same weekend.
