In a coordinated crackdown on illicit activities, authorities in South Los Angeles took into custody or cited 22 individuals last week for their alleged involvement in an illegal gambling operation. Acting on multiple anonymous tips received through L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers, the Los Angeles Police Department launched its operation at a small shopping plaza located at 10122 S. Figueroa St.
The LAPD's comprehensive effort involved several divisions, including the Southeast Area Vice Unit, Gang Enforcement Detail, and Narcotics Enforcement Detail, in addition to multiple vice units from other districts. These units, as outlined in an announcement by the LAPD and reported by lapdonline.org, swept into the location at around 8:00 p.m. on Thursday. Their search yielded illegal gambling machines, narcotics, and a pair of firearms.
The individuals taken into custody are facing varying charges, ranging from illegal gambling to narcotics possession and firearms violations. Included among the arrested, as per LAPD's report, are names like Rafael Casanova, 35, and Noe Cabrera, 30, each with specific allegations detailed in their booking information. KTLA further reported that all involved parties are residents of Los Angeles, underscoring the operation's local impact.
Photographic evidence from the sting, at least one image of which shows gambling tables set up in a dimly lit room, was disseminated by authorities to offer a glimpse into the clandestine operation. Meanwhile, those cited during the operation, such as 28-year-old Cristian Teutla and Eddy Martinez, 44, were released with citations. Details of their involvement and the specifics of their citations were available in the press release, but the nature of the illegal gambling operation—whether it's part of a larger network—is still under investigation.
The LAPD and the community's collaborative efforts in combating such operations were emphasized by the acknowledgement of anonymous tips that precipitated the sting. The department is actively encouraging anyone with further information on this, or any illegal gambling activities, to reach out to Southeast Area Vice Detail at (213) 972-1017, or to contact L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers, as suggested by KTLA. Tipsters have the option to remain anonymous either through the hotline or by submitting information via the Crime Stoppers website.
