Early this morning, a shooting in Akron left a 32-year-old man dead, in what the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office is now ruling as a homicide.FOX8 reported that the Akron police were dispatched to the scene at the 100 block of E. Wilbeth Road shortly after midnight, at approximately 12:05 a.m.
Upon their arrival, the Akron officers found the victim inside a residence with multiple gunshot wounds. He was declared dead at 12:45 a.m., with his identity has yet to be released, according to Cleveland19. There have been no arrests made thus far in connection to the shooting.
The events took a dramatic turn when Akron police tracked the suspect, Byron Johnson, aged 28, to a residence on Silvercrest Avenue. WKYC report states, "Based on preliminary information, officers determined that the victim was at the residence with the suspect and at least one other male." At some point during the encounter, Johnson allegedly shot the victim and then fled in the victim's car.
This escalated when Johnson reportedly committed aggravated burglary, assaulting a 65-year-old woman at another location before being cornered by police. He allegedly barricaded himself in a house on Storer Avenue, where SWAT was later called in. After a brief standoff, Johnson attempted to escape through a window. Still, he was eventually apprehended and subsequently charged with murder, along with several other offenses, including aggravated burglary, felonious assault, and motor vehicle theft, as WKYC outlined.
