Authorities have issued a serious warning regarding a new scam involving suspects impersonating police officers via telephone to demand money for supposedly missed jury duties. According to a post by the Anne Arundel County Police Department, a victim fell prey to this scam yesterday and sent an undisclosed amount of money to the fraudulent callers.

The scam unfolds when the victim receives a call from someone claiming to be with the Anne Arundel County Police Department. The suspect alleges that the victim has missed jury duty and must pay a fine or face jail time. Suspicious, the victim is told that they could speak to a judge the following day to resolve the issue. After this alarming assertion, the victim transferred money through their banking institution to the callers.

The Anne Arundel County Police Department warns that no legitimate business will request immediate payment by gift cards, wire transfers, or cash over an unsolicited call. They urge the public to hang up on such calls and contact someone they trust or local police if they think scammers have targeted them.

Anyone who has experienced a similar scam or has information is urged to contact the Southern District Detective Unit at 410-222-1965.
