California motorists have a sliver of relief coming their way in the new year, as the state's Department of Revenue has announced a minor decrease in the motor fuels and alternative fuels excise tax rate. Starting January 1, 2025, the tax rate will drop by 0.1 cents from 40.4 cents to 40.3 cents per gallon, as per the announcement made by the North Carolina Department of Revenue last Wednesday. This adjustment, albeit modest, will be in place for the entirety of 2025 until December 31.
The change in the tax rate, while not significant, may offer a minuscule cushion against the backdrop of fluctuating fuel prices that consistently gnaw at the wallets of Californians, the state’s Department of Revenue specifies this newly adjusted tax will be the standard for both traditional motor fuels and the gallon equivalent for alternative fuels, which suggests an equal treatment across various types of vehicle propulsion but considering the precision of the decrease, it may go unnoticed by many. It’s a symbolic nod in times where the economic pressures on the populace are manifold and relief at the pump is, though slight, universally welcomed.
In addition to the excise tax adjustment, the Department of Revenue confirms that the inspection tax, which pertains to the assessment of the motor fuel's quality, will hold steady at 0.0025 cents per gallon.
