Two 16-year-old students at Canton South High School have faced charges following an event that unfolded within school premises, specifically in a boys' bathroom, on Monday. According to the Stark County Sheriff's Office, one teenager has been charged with assault and theft, while the second has been charged with assault, as per information obtained by WKYC.
Footage of the incident has been widely disseminated on social media, depicting several students encircling and intimidating another student. As outlined by Canton Repository, the ordeal involved students demanding the victim to disrobe, leading to one assailant forcibly removing the victim’s jacket and another slapping and punching the victim. Students exiting the bathroom, unrelated to the events that soon would take to a higher level of hostility, were observed in the initial stages of the video.
In response to the troubling occurrence, Canton Local Schools Superintendent Brett Yeagley has announced an immediate investigation. In a statement shared with Cleveland19, Yeagley affirmed, "Our administration started investigating immediately after being notified, and is continuing to review all evidence from the incident." Moreover, the school district is working with the Stark County Sheriff’s Office to ensure all parties involved are held accountable.
While expressing the gravity of the situation, the district intends to enforce school discipline in alignment with existing board policies. "We take this matter very seriously and are working to make sure everyone involved is held accountable," Yeagley told the high school's families in a memo, according to a Canton Repository interview. As the investigation is still underway, it remains uncertain what specific disciplinary actions will be administered to those implicated in the video.
