The National Weather Service has forecasted weather patterns for Columbus and Cincinnati. According to their latest update, an upper-level low will migrate from the Great Lakes through the region through Friday before leaving for the East Coast this weekend. This pattern is expected to bring multiple disturbances, including snow and rain showers, gusty winds, and a noticeable temperature drop. Dry conditions are on the horizon for the weekend as high pressure builds in.
Residents along and just south of the I-70 corridor should brace for the initial about of snow showers this morning, with some areas potentially experiencing heavier snow bands. "These snow showers will be scattered, but areas under heavier snow showers or bands could have temporary reductions to visibilities," the National Weather Service explained. The wintry mix could continue into the early afternoon, and while main road surfaces remain warm, visibility may be reduced, making the morning commute potentially tricky.
Following this, a more consistent snowfall is projected for late afternoon heading into the evening, particularly affecting southeast Indiana, Southwest Ohio, and Northern Kentucky. Accumulations of 1 to 2 inches are possible before tapering off overnight. A winter weather advisory has been issued from 4 PM to 4 AM, anticipating the season's first significant snowfall. The associated risks emphasize the potential impacts on roads as surface temperatures drop after sunset.
Dipping temperatures today will see highs ranging only from the mid-30s northwest to around 40 over the southeast, with overnight lows falling to the mid-20s to around 30. "West winds to gust up to 30 mph today and 25 mph overnight," the National Weather Service reported. Into the weekend, however, things look up with a rise in temperatures back to seasonable normals.
The aviation sector will also contend with challenging weather conditions. Snow showers forecasted this morning require vigilance for temporary IFR visibilities and lower-end MVFR ceilings. As per the National Weather Service's outlook for air travel, gusty winds can be expected Friday, with worsening visibility possibly extending into Saturday.
