According to several local news reports, a Columbus doctor has been found guilty of defrauding Medicaid of approximately $1.5 million. NBC4i reported that a jury convicted Dr. Robert Florea and his company, Buckeye Health and Research, of one count each of Medicaid fraud, a third-degree felony.
The conviction resulted from an investigation by the Ohio Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit, which revealed that Florea, who operates his clinic on Highview Boulevard, billed for medical equipment, including braces for joint and back pain, that he never purchased. He was accused of having claimed reimbursement for more than 5,100 pieces of equipment over three years, yet records indicated only 460 were bought. The Attorney General's office disclosed these findings in a statement initially reported by The Columbus Dispatch.
The 49-year-old physician headquartered his clinic on the South Side of Columbus, operating under the guise of legitimate medical practice. While the sentencing date has yet to be set, the jury's decision underscores the severity of the charges he faced. The misuse of Medicaid funds, a program designed to assist the most vulnerable in our communities, reflects a breach of public trust and professional obligation.
"The fraudulent claims resulted in a $1.5 million loss to the Medicaid program," the Ohio Attorney General's Office said, illustrating the financial impact of Florea's actions as reported by FOX28 Columbus. Florea's bid to unjustly enrich himself came at a high cost to his career and the fiscal integrity of state healthcare resources. His indictment last year has culminated in a verdict that holds him to account for the misuse of taxpayer dollars intended to provide healthcare for those in need.
