Yesterday, a police-involved shooting unfolded in the 6000 block of Cooper Colony Drive, stemming from a homicide investigation earlier in the day. According to a media release by the Columbus Division of Police, homicide unit detectives identified a suspect, 16-year-old Ricardo Ramirez, in a homicide that took place at the intersection of Jester Lane and Princess Place.
Surveillance led to an address where the suspect's vehicle was seen. Columbus Division of Police SWAT officers observed Ramirez leaving the location shortly after 3:00 P.M. and initiated a stop using undercover officers, a K9 cruiser, and SWAT personnel. Ramirez exited the vehicle with a rifle in hand and ran, resulting in at least one officer firing their weapon and injuring him. The quick actions of tactical medics associated with the SWAT ensured that Ramirez was transported to Riverside Hospital in stable, though life-threatening condition.
The recovered rifle is believed to be the one used in the initial homicide. While Ramirez was charged with Murder, the incident also opens the possibility of additional charges. The driver of the car remained on the scene and appeared cooperative. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is taking the lead on the subsequent police-involved shooting case.
