Dearborn is gearing up to honor its veterans in a new light this year, joining the ranks of Purple Heart Cities across the nation. As reported by the City of Dearborn's official website, the city's Veterans Day ceremony on Nov. 11 will carry additional significance following the Dearborn City Council's resolution, passed on Oct. 22, to recognize the city as a Purple Heart City.

The Purple Heart City designation, not just a title, is symbolic of the blood spilled and the valor demonstrated by the city's servicemembers. Dearborn has announced that city buildings will be bathed in purple lights throughout November, saluting the veterans and Purple Heart recipients who, put themselves second, to their country's needs, first and foremost.

The annual Veterans Day Ceremony is set to take place at 11 a.m. at the Ford Community Performing Arts Center, located at 15801 Michigan Ave. A gathering organized by the City of Dearborn and the Dearborn Allied War Veterans Council (DAWVC), this event opens its doors for the public to join in the recognition of local veterans for their commitment and contributions not only in the line of duty but also within the Dearborn community.

Dearborn's Mayor Hammoud has been vocal about the city's new status, highlighting its importance during National Veterans and Military Families Month. Mayor Hammoud told the City of Dearborn's news outlet, "As a Purple Heart community, Dearborn joins hundreds of other communities across the country to recognize the service and sacrifice of our local veterans, active service members, and their families."

Originating from General George Washington in 1782, the Purple Heart Medal stands as the oldest military decoration currently in use. Reserved specifically for those wounded or who made the ultimate sacrifice in combat, the medal initially began as the Badge of Military Merit. Recognizing the Purple Heart's significance, the city's dedication to its veterans further solidifies on Veterans Day, where Dearborn plans to not only show its gratitude but to also spark greater awareness for the sacrifices made by Military Merit badge recipients.
