Deion Sanders, the head coach for the CU Buffs and a former Jim Thorpe Award recipient, has been quite vocal, and unequivocally Deion, about his disapproval of the Jim Thorpe Award's recent decision. Sanders expressed his discontent after his standout player, Travis Hunter, was conspicuously omitted from the list of finalists for the prestigious award recognizing the nation's best collegiate defensive back.
"If this ain't the most idiotic thing in college football, that he's not a finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award," Sanders said, as obtained by 9News. The CU coach's disappointment stemmed from the fact, that Hunter has had a season full of accolades being nominated for the Maxwell Award, the Walter Camp Award, the Biletnikoff Award, the Paul Hornung Award, and the Bednarik Award, to name a few.
Hunter's versatility on the field was a key highlight of his season, earning him spots as a finalist for awards in categories including most outstanding player, best receiver, top defensive player, and most versatile, each showcasing his dexterity in different spheres of the game. It's a rare occurrence to witness a player dominate both offense and defense in college football, and Hunter's ability to do so has set him apart from his peers, according to Denver7.
In defiance of the award committee's decision, Sanders showed support for his protégé by stating, "They just pretty much messed up all the integrity of the award, and he can have mine," as reported by 9News. Such a move doesn't just throw shade on the selection process, it puts the spotlight back on the player Sanders believes has been wronged.
