Denver's gearing up for a day of gratitude and turkey as the city offices announce a shutdown for the Thanksgiving holiday this Thursday, Nov. 28. According to an advisory from the City and County of Denver, key services will hit pause, so plan if you've got business with the city.
For those looking to navigate city amenities or services, the rundown is straightforward with the Mayor’s Office, City Council offices, and more shuttered for the day. If you find a lost pet or need Denver Health, don't stress, they'll still open their doors. Emergency responders from the Denver Sheriff, Police, and Fire departments are not taking a break and will be available, as reported by the City and County of Denver.
With the city's 3-1-1 line down, the digital world offers a respite. Hit denvergov.org and click "Report an Issue" for non-emergency services, or text "Hi" to 439311 to chat with Sunny, the city's new chatbot helper. Denver 8 TV will keep its programming rolling, for those wishing to tune in to something other than football and parades.
While the Denver County Court and other state courts will not adjourn to the sounds of the holiday, Denver’s parking meters are in the giving spirit, offering free parking on Thanksgiving day. The Department of Transportation & Infrastructure permit counters will catch a break too but worry not, right-of-way permits can still be snagged online. Denver's Recreation Centers will also catch a day off, announcing a one-day closure.
The Department of Housing Stability, along with the Denver Human Services, won't be available in person, but those in immediate need can find shelter details at denvergov.org/FindShelter. Reports of suspected child or adult abuse can still be made through their respective hotlines, ensuring that someone is always listening, even as offices take a hiatus.
When it comes to the more practical matters, don't put your trash out. Denver Solid Waste Management services won't be making their usual rounds on Thanksgiving. Just push your cans out a day later than usual.
For those who like to be prepared, the full list of what's open and what’s not is available on the City and County of Denver's news page. It might not be as fun as planning your Thanksgiving menu, but it's bound to be more useful if you're in a bind during the holiday shutdown.
